½ DAY OR FULL-DAY INITIATION ON TIE-DYE TECHNIQUES
You will spend ½ day or a full day with the women Tie-dyers. They will provide you with a white piece of material, help you choose your design and realize it. You will select colors and Tie-dye your piece of fabric. All works created during the workshop are yours to keep!
½ DAY OR FULL-DAY INITIATION TO SAND PAINTING TECHNIQUES
Sand painting is one of the most popular arts in Senegal. The technique of realizing the works is strictly based on the use of local raw material (sands from the dunes, beaches or volcano). The designs created are typically African. All works created during the workshop are yours to keep!
½ DAY OR FULL-DAY INITIATION TO BASKET WEAVING
Basket weaving is another common craft cultivated Senegal. The types of baskets and the colors vary from region to region. With the basket weavers of Dakar, you will have the possibility to develop the piece you like the most and own it.All works created during the workshop are yours to keep!
½ DAY OR FULL-DAY UNDERGLASS PAINTING
Under glass painting is one of the oldest Senegalese art forms, popular from larger towns to the rural areas. The paintings represent scenes of daily life just as in Naif Art. Some of the Dakar- based Underglass painting masters will teach you their techniques and help you will realize your own paintings.All works created during the workshop are yours to keep!
½ DAY INITIATION TO WOOD CARVING
Your initiation to wood carving techniques will be conducted by the skilled woodcarvers of Soumbedioune Handicraft Center. All works created during the workshop are yours to keep!
1 hour lecture on various themes such as:
o The history of the former Empire of Mali
o Traditional medicine and healing in West Africa
o Evolution of women issues since Senegal’s Independence
o The education system of Senegal: Situation of today and perspectives of the future
o Social organization of Senegal: healthcare system and public assistance
o Ethnicity and cultures of Senegal
LANGUAGE COURSES
Courses are two hours in length per day and Senegalese national languages offerings are:
