Gabou Circuit: Discovering Senegal and Guinea Bissau

Day 1: Bissau
Departure from Lisbon on Saturday.
Arrival in Bissau in the night from Saturday to Sunday, capital of Guinea Bissau by TAP flight.
Reception and assistance by our team at the airport.
Transfer to the Palace hotel or similar.

Day 2: Bissau / Bubaque (Bissagos Islands)

Breakfast at the hotel and departure for the Port of Bissau where you will embark by boat for Bubaque Island in the Bissagos Islands. The departure time will be checked the day before as it depends on the tide. Bubaque is the largest of the islands of the archipelago classified MAB (Man and Biosphere) and World Heritage.
On arrival in Bubaque, welcome by the customary authorities.
BBQ fish lunch.
The afternoon will be devoted to touring the island in a 4 × 4.
In this paradisiacal place, sung so much by Captain Cousteau, you will discover nature in all its beauty. The crystalline water of the sea, the diversity of flowers, the ornithological sites, the symbiosis of people and nature.
Visit to the house of Okinka Pampa, freedom fighter and great resistance against the Portuguese colonial occupation.

Day 3: The Bissagos archipelago

Breakfast at the hotel Departure from Bubaque by motorized canoe for a day's visit to the Bissagos archipelago. You will discover the many islands with lush vegetation with their immense beaches, the oyster beds of the mangrove trees, the rare birds coming on pilgrimage to this natural paradise. Visit of the "Orango" natural park Fish barbecue on a deserted beach. Afternoon visit to the Caravel Parauno Isimaio islands etc. Meeting with hospitable populations who respect nature. Discussion around their mores and customs. Return to Bubaque at the end of the afternoon. Dinner (with folklore accompaniment) and overnight in Punta Anchacaile

Day 4: Bissagos / Bissau

Breakfast at the hotel and departure from the Bissagos Islands by boat for the return to Bissau. Arrival in Bissau after 3 hours of navigation. Lunch in a typical restaurant in downtown Bissau.

Afternoon, city tour of Bissau with Portuguese colonial architecture. Visit of the typical markets, visit of the Quinhamel market. Dinner and overnight at the Palace Hotel.

Day 5: Bissau / Bafata / Bissau

Breakfast at the hotel. Today will be dedicated to visiting the Mandinka and Mandjack villages. Between Bissau and Bafata, you will discover many ethnic groups formerly united in the Gabu Empire. You will discover the richness and diversity of the villages, their ancestral cultures, their rites and traditions. Lunch during the visit, in a typical restaurant and continuation of your village exploration in the afternoon. Dinner and overnight at your hotel in Bissau.

 

Day 6: Bissau / Ziguinchor (Senegal)

Breakfast and departure from Bissau for Ziguinchor, capital of the southern region of Senegal. Through Safim, Bula, Ingore, Cachet and Sao Domingo you will discover the beauty of traditional villages, the daily activities of the populations (working in the rice fields, making palm oil, artisanal activity, etc.) you will stop to discuss, exchange. Lunch on the way at the stop in Sao Domingo where you will taste one of the country's culinary specialties as a farewell (braised fish with a bed of vegetables). Afternoon continue to Ziguinchor after a brief visit to Sao Domingo. Arrive in Ziguinchor in the middle of the afternoon. Visit of the city, of the Saint-Maur market, rich in various regional products, spices and local crafts. Visit to the art market, visit the picturesque and lively fishing port at the end of the day where fish sellers and wholesalers meet. Installation at your hotel (Kadiandoumagne or similar). Welcome dinner in Casamance.

Day 7: Ziguinchor / Carabane / Ziguinchor

After breakfast, departure for Elinkine in the South of the Casamance River. You will cross the villages of Diolas de Oussouye, Nyassia and Mlomp known for its typical architecture, classified as national cultural heritage. At Elinkine, departure by motorized canoe for the island of Karabane that you will wait after 30 minutes of navigation through the bolongs (corridors of vegetation on the water). Arrival at the island of Karabane, former Portuguese possession and slavery until in the 19th century. Lunch at the Convent run by the sisters on the island. Afternoon, visit of Karabane, its church with impressive architecture, visit of some houses, meeting with the inhabitants of this island lost at the mouth of the Casamance river. Return to Ziguinchor at the end of the day. Dinner with entertainment with Diola folklore and overnight stay.

Day 8: Ziguinchor / Banjul

Breakfast in Ziguinchor and departure from Ziguinchor by the national road West towards Banjul. Visit of the villages of Badiana where you will meet the women's cooperative specializing in the transformation of agricultural products, visit of Bignona, meeting with the notables of Baila for discussions Arrival in Banjul around 1 pm. Lunch in a typical restaurant of the city. Installation at the hotel after lunch. In the afternoon, city tour of Banjul once known as Bathurst during the British colonial era. Visit of the central market (crafts and local products), visit of the national museum, visit of the sacred crocodile pond. Return to the hotel in the late afternoon. Dinner and overnight

Day 9: Banjul / Kaolack

After breakfast, departure for the Saloum region. After the picturesque crossing of the bridge over the Gambia River by ferry, continuation to Toubacouta along the river. Saloum in an area classified as a natural heritage of mankind. Lunch in Toubacouta and meeting with the local healer. Afternoon continuation to Kaolack. Dinner and overnight at the "Relais de Kaolack"

Day 10: Kaolack / Saint –Louis

Breakfast and departure from Kaolack after a brief visit of the city and its market rich in medicinal herbs. Continuation to Touba, crossing part of Ferlo inhabited by the Peulh ethnic group. Meeting with the “Mourides” in Touba. Meeting with spiritual guides from the community, they will explain the life and work of Sheikh Bamba. Visit of the mosque, the Sheikh's mausoleum and for lunch you will be the hosts of a marabout. Departure for Saint – Louis in the afternoon. Dinner and overnight at the Residence hotel or similar in St –Louis.

Day 11: Saint -Louis

Breakfast and departure for the Langue de Barbarie park on the Senegal river. In this magnificent landscape, between river and sea, you will discover the park, rich in its flamingos, its egrets, pelicans, eagles - fishermen, etc.
Lunch at the park.
Afternoon: return to Saint – Louis.
Visit of the city, its popular district of Guet Ndar and its cemetery with fishermen. Visit of the historic center in a horse-drawn carriage.
Dinner in a restaurant on the river. Overnight at the 3-star hotel.

Day 12: Saint –Louis / Lompoul Desert

Breakfast and departure from Saint – Louis for the Lompoul desert.
You will leave by the beach in a 4 × 4 vehicle (the tide permitting). Visit of fishing villages along the coast, meeting with the populations. Arrival in Lompoul. Installation under tents. Lunch in a Moorish tent. Afternoon visit to the sand dunes on camel back. Dinner around a wood fire in the tent, overnight stay

Day 13: Lompoul / Dakar

Breakfast and departure from Lompoul early in the morning. Visit of Lac Rose, famous stage of the original “Paris –Dakar” and continuation to Dakar after lunch. City tour and visit to the island of Gorée where you will have dinner before reaching the airport for your departure
